FRENCH ATLANTIC COAST
The main Breton event this year is the biennial giant known as La
Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan. We’ve rhapsodised plenty about this
mad regatta for years. It’s essentially a raid for almost anything
classic that floats, held in the fiercely tidal and beguilingly beautiful
bay of Morbihan. It runs from 27 May to 2 June this year and although
it’s a big commitment, it’s something every sailor should do at least
once. See semainedugolfe.com. Morbihan attendees all know the
wonderful secret of the French Yacht Club Classique, who run a series
of 25 rallies and regattas along the French (and occasionally Spanish)
Atlantic seaboard all summer. This ambitious, eccentric programme
generally offers free berthing to visiting yachts. Some sailors claim to
have spent an entire summer without paying marina fees! See
yachtclubclassique.com for their programme. Lovers of Tall Ships
should not miss the epic Rouen Armada, held from 6-16 June. Fifty of
the world’s largest ships, fireworks every night and free attendance
are among the draws. Last held six years ago. http://www.armada.org/en
