Wild Horses was built in 1998 as the first of two identical yachts to a new ‘W’ class, intended for fast,
evenly matched, spirit-of-tradition yacht racing, the brainchild of American yachtsman Donald Tofias.
She was designed by Joel White and built in modern timber construction at Maine’s Brooklin Boat Yard.
“The W76s were kind of a synthesis of some of the late 12-Ms and the Herreshoff NY50,” says Donald.
She has a sistership called White Wings. This is a thoroughly modern yacht for racing and cruising, with
all creature comforts, and a 14ft (4.3m) Downeast Peapod thrown in as a tender.
Lying Rhode Island. Asking $1,995,000. Tel: +1 978 400 6093, sparkmanstephens.com
CAN CAN
Swansong in wood
For a yacht from the drawing board of , progressive Swedish
designer Arvid Laurin, the 40ft (12.2m) racing yacht Can Can is
pretty traditional. She was launched in 1966, a year after Dick
Carter’s Rabbit (CB371), with spade rudder and fin keel, changed
everything. Can Can is a long keeler, all timber, with 22mm-thick
carvel mahogany planking and beautiful bright-finished topsides.
She’s a fast boat nonetheless – nine firsts out of 10 starts in her
first season and a fourth place in the ‘67 Fastnet attest to that.
From 2012, she has undergone a thorough, rolling refit
programme at Cantiere Alto Adriatico and is now “perfect”.
Lying Italy. Asking €95,000. zacboats.it
LASSE
10-M built for Eva Braun
The story of Lasse is not fully known, but this 10-M yacht was
built for Hitler’s wife Eva Braun by the king of Denmark,
because Eva was a fan of the slender yachts designed by the
master Johan Anker. Since then, she has changed her name
from Eva to Lasse and starred in the 1960 French film Purple
Noon. These days, she represents the paragon of Metre Class
beauty from one of its greatest designers. Details are scant at
present, but she’s 60ft (18m) long and looks to be in great
condition, with a Yanmar 75hp diesel.
Lying La Rochelle. Asking €395,000 (VAT paid).
