NAVIGATE

Wren Gallery, London

Three years ago,

photographer Paul

Thompson embarked

on a journey around

Britain’s coast to

photograph from land

the many navigational

marks that stand as

sentinels against a

seemingly endless sea.

The result is intriguingly

transfi gurative. This

port marker, for

instance, takes on

the appearance of

a standard lamp in

this context.

Despite the end of Beaulieu Boat Jumble, there

are plenty more listed on the boat jumble website.

In May, there are jumbles in Irving, Ayrshire (5),

Southampton (12), Shepperton (18) and Newton

Abbot, Devon (25). boatjumbleassociation.co.uk.

JUNE 1989 CB14

The biggest story in our June 1989 issue was

a double feature on the Salcombe Yawls, the

racing dayboats of Devon whose origins go back

two centuries to the local fi shing boats on this

part of the Devon coast. It’s still a popular class

today. Elsewhere in the magazine, we looked at

the Ness Yoal, a broad, Scottish fi shing dayboat

with a similarly long history, the Seagull

outboard motor and a Coventry Climax-powered

Albatross speedboat. John Leather, then our

technical editor, explained how to take the lines

off a boat. Towards the back of the magazine,

we had stories on the stunning Australian steam

yacht Ena, which looks just as good today, and a

review of the classic GRP Rustler 36, which took

all three podium spots in the recent Golden Globe.
