Bight, SA TRAVEL
Great Australian Bight
- Edward John Eyre’s ill-fated 1664km trip from
Fowlers Bay to Albany took 132 days, a
remarkable average of 12.6km per day. - Dutch explorer Francois Thijssen was the first
to discover The Bight in 1627 before Matthew
Flinders charted the shore in 1802 during his
circumnavigationofthecountry.
Edward John Eyre
- Before Eyre charted east-to-west, he cut his
teeth driving 1000 sheep and 600 cattle from
Monaro, NSW to Adelaide, SA. - After leaving Australia in 1845, Eyre became
Lieutenant Governor of New Zealand, parts of
the West Indies and Jamaica before becoming
Governor-in-Chief of Jamaica. He returned to
England under dubious circumstances to
utimately pass away in 1901, aged 86. - Lake Eyre, Eyre Peninsula, Eyre Creek, Eyre
Highway, a high school, the Eyre Hotel in
Whyalla, the Eyre district in WA and three
villages plus a creek in New Zealand are all
named after Edward John Eyre.
