family’sfarminWakefield.Bythetime
hearrivedatthescene,it wasalready
burningoutofcontrol.
“Itbecameintenseveryquickly,”he
says.“Thespeedatwhichit wasmoving
wasquitedauntingandthewind,dry-
nessandlackofhumidityaddedtothe
danger.Itwasevidentit wasgoingtobe
oneofthelargestfiresI’deverseen.”
Tobywastednotimerequestingsup-
port,includinganurgentcalltohisfa-
ther,Bill,whohe’semployedsinceset-
tingupReidHelicopterswithpilotwife
Rachaelin2007.BillwasawayinWel-
lingtonandcouldn’tgeta flighthome
tillthenextmorning.Astheplaneap-
proachedNelson,stillflyingabovethe
clouds,heknewitdidn’tbodewell
whenhecouldsmellsmokeinthecabin.
