Alexisanotherwisesaneyoungman,

roomlegendforhisfriends.Theyalsotell
ussomethinginterestingaboutwhatthe
braindoes– oris supposedtodo– when
it sleeps.ThepartofAlex’sbrainthatreg-
ulatesmovementandemotionscanbe
awake,whilethepartsthatregulate
memory,consciousnessandrational
thoughtareasleep.Withoutthese,hebe-
lieveshisirrationaldreams– likethetiny,
toe-nibblinggazelles.Andwithoutthe
normalparalysisofhismusclesinsleep,
heactsthemoutphysically.
