SALVAGE OPERATION
When it comes to sustainable wood flooring, Woodworks by
Ted Todd has every angle covered. The company began in
1993, reclaiming wood floors and timbers from dilapidated
factories and cotton mills in the north of England. These
resourceful practices are continued today. Woodworks uses
salvaged wood from various sources and gives it renewed
life – it recently salvaged Douglas fir from the old War Office
in London. Among its stock are rare species such as Burmese
teak, English walnut and pitch pine (the latter was used
extensively in the recent restoration of a 167ft motor yacht).

RECLAIMING
LONG-LOST TIMBER
Ohio-based woodwork company Merritt
also has a focus on sustainability,
reclaiming sunken red cypress trees
from the Apalachicola swamps in
Florida. The once-forgotten remnants
of the harvesting that took place in
the 1800s can be reused for high-
end cabinetry or wood flooring. The
company also reclaims longleaf pine,
a tree that used to cover 36 million
hectares of the south-eastern US until
it was exhausted in the 1920s, and can
be found in dismantled buildings from
the pre-steel era. Merritt’s wood can be
found in the salon of the 281ft Cakewalk
(now Aquila). merrittwoodwork.com

MEET THE EXPERT:
Joyce Clear

  • In a design career that has spanned
15 years – in luxury residential
interiors as well as superyachts –
    Joyce Clear of Clear Group
    International has focused on
    sustainable innovations and
    wellness, creating interiors that are
    both environmentally responsible
and healthier for those who inhabit
    them. Clear believes superyacht
    owners can embrace sustainability
    without sacrificing their discerning
    standards. “Many people, when
they hear the words ‘green’ or
‘sustainable,’ think that they have to
    compromise on the luxury element,
or feel it’s going to be inconvenient
or expensive to implement – [but]
this is the ultimate example of
    efficiency. If something is
sustainable, it has got a longer
lifespan, it uses the best raw
    materials, it’s more streamlined, it’s
    environmentally positive and it is
healthier.” See above left for Clear’s
