In the traditional darkroom,
to lighten selective parts of
an image you would need to block
the light from hitting that area by
dodging it, thereby underexposing
part of the print. Similarly,
Photoshop’s Dodge tool lets
you selectively lighten areas.
The tool can target either the
shadows, midtones or highlights.

TOP TIP
If Protect Tones is unchecked, it’s very easy to dodge highlights to full white –
useful for product shots when a white background is needed.
