That was 2006 and since then,
having watched as small patches of
rust evaporated into nothingness
leaving a ventilation channel in
places that I didn’t even know
existed, having stood under the
hoist elevated Kombi while Kimm
pointed out the salient points of
advanced metal fatigue and all
the time dreaming of how I could
convince my long suffering yet-to-be
Kombi convert wife as to why we
needed to recreate the magic that is
Kombi. Kimm was transparent in his
appraisal of what was required and
costs and, in his usual laconic way,
eased me into the state of accepting
the fact it would cost large amounts
of everything and if it looked simple


to fix, the process would reveal
another issue that was not simple.
So, the task began to morph Brian
into ‘Brian’. As a VW mechanic
I am a reasonably good general
practitioner and so my role was clear
... keep fixing people and Kimm
would fix the bus.
Little is known about the Kombi
prior to 2003 when Michael
Wiersma purchased it, although
deeper layers of paint suggest a
career with PMG and outback
mail delivery. Originally a Panel
Van, at some point side windows
had been fitted. I had Wayne
Penrose carry out some upgrades
and modifications with an IRS
conversion, 1776cc Type 1 Superbug
engine consisting of an Engle cam’,
