love the way unstaged
period photographs
capture and preserve
a moment in time,
as in this month’s Welcome image
taken at the Wolfsburg factory gates
in 1951. I’m unsure if it’s the end
of a shift, or a convoy heading off
to showcase or even road test the
vehicles, but just check out that line
of new bugs and barndoor buses. I
just love the little incidental details
- the guy in the foreground’s leather
flying helmet, jacket and briefcase,
the children watching intently, or
the gateman’s bike casually propped
by the office door.
Custom styling is a recurrent
theme across our features buses this
month, from combining classic stock
looks and subtle modern upgrades
to something a bit more radical,
as in our T5 Swamper with its
Raptor Bed Liner painted bumpers,
roof, grille and wing mirrors, and
Tuff Torque wheels. Lovers of
preserving an original unrestored
look will simply adore our 1962
Microbus with a stance to scare
any ground-hugging weed, coupled
with original paint and patina. This
was originally used as a shuttle bus
by Cactus Jack’s Casino in Nevada
and the sun-bleached signwriting
is still just visible; one novel feature
installed for the Casino, and still in
working order, was a roof mounted
swivelling spotlight. Very cool.
Staying in the sunny US, check
out the stunning Montana Red
and Cloud White 1969 Microbus;
combining classic stock looks,
period custom styling and upgraded
engine and running gear, this bus
Enjoy your bus;

I
just oozes with charm and character.
More shiny paint can be found on
our 1967 Australian Kombi with
its eye-catching Sulphur Yellow
and Candy White paint bringing a
smile to the faces of all who see it.
Scotland is the home of our 1971 Bay
- formerly a Danbury Camper now
resplendent in Kawasaki Green and
Ford Frozen White and fitted with
a modern interior. Our final feature,
an Autohomes T3 Kamper pop top,
takes a much more subtle route;
over ten years of ownership this
T3 has been given a South African
style facelift, Westy roof, Nightfire
Red metallic repaint, and a modern
interior but still retains its classic
looks.
It’s still March as I write this, but
by the time you read it the show
season will be well under way,
with Dubs at the Mill, Bus Types,
and Dubs in Wonderland already
having gone, and I am really looking

forward to Stanford Hall and the
SSVC weekend and getting out and
about again. Though it will not be
the same without Meg our Collie
who died (peacefully of old age)
recently and who loved being in
the bus.
Also this month we join the UK
cruise to Ninove, meander through
Devon and Cornwall and visit a very
wet and windy OCTO - the sun does
not always shine in California then!
Wherever your bus takes you this
coming year – Happy Trails.
