Volkswagen Camper & Commercial – May 2019

(ff) #1
some other activities.
But this was not a big event with
traders, live music or a band etc;
this annual meeting is simply a
get together of old friends and the
chance to make new bus friends -
music was provided by a CD! UK
readers may not be familiar with
the way we Germans like getting
together at bus events, especially
at meal times; everyone puts out
their tables in front of their buses
and joins them up with neighbours
to make a long line. It is a great way
to bring people together to share
conversation, laughter and some
beers and nice food. Some people
also brought parts for sale, but it was
like a swap meet where people try to
help each other not make money.

Most of the people who came
along were typical of the bus
ownership here in Germany. Many
have owned their bus for a very long
time and see it as a family member
who lives in the garage. It is quite
different to the UK scene, and most
cars are still stock and original; big
powerful engines and slammed
to the floor buses are not loved as
much as they are in the UK!
As I only was there for one day,
I missed some rare and unusual
buses including some factory high
roofs and Bundespost buses but
there were still plenty to look at. Of
course the Westfalia camper was the
most popular model, and you could
see many different model, colour
and roof variations. Interestingly

there were no cars that had plates
from the old East Germany, these
cars were not available to the East
Germans, just to what used to be
West Germany. I was surprised to
see some ex-army T2s however,
and there was also along a lovely
fire truck with its ladders and
equipment and a complete original
ambulance with all its fittings.
You can find out more about the
IGT2 Club at https://www.bulli.org/
as well as their 2019 meetings; if you
have a Bay you would be made very
welcome at one of their meetings.

9: Fully original Fire
Truck cost the new
owner just 4000
euros back in 2007,
he had to get special
permission from the
town fire chief to
buy it.

10: Lovely liveried
panel van; many
firms used their VW
buses to advertise
their business using
eye catching designs
