Australasian Dirt Bike – May 2019

YAMAHA ANNOUNCED the
long-awaited Ténéré 700 will
land Down Under in December
this year with an aggressive
price tag of $15,499 (excluding
on-road costs). Revealed as the
T7 back in 2016 at the EICMA
show in Milan, Italy, the all-new
Ténéré is set to shake up the
growing adventure market.
With a bill of $15,499, the
Ténéré 700 is sharply priced
when compared with similar
options on the market, but it is
still $1500 more than the
previous model XT660Z
Ténéré. That may be because
this model carries little DNA
over from the previous model.
Yamaha set out to create a
rally-inspired adventure bike
that’slightandnimblefor

off-road riding, but possesses
suffi cient comfort and fuel
capacity for longer road stints.
Despite the cost increase
over the previous model,
Yamaha Australia’s Marketing
Manager Sean Goldhawk,
believes the Ténéré 700 is
priced correctly, “At $15,
RRP inc GST we believe the
Ténéré 700 offers great value
for money in a popular market
segment within the adventure
bike category. With models like
the Kawasaki KLR650, Suzuki
DR650 and Ténéré 660
coming to the end of their
model lives, the new 700 twin
is well placed to offer existing

  • as well as new - adventure
    riders an awesome experience
at a value packed price point.”

Yamaha’s 689cc parallel-
twin engine from their
road-going MT-07, powers the
new Ténéré, which Yamaha
claim has improved torque to
further boost the Ténéré
700’s off-road performance.
Using an existing engine in the
Yamaha range has helped the
Japanese manufacturer keep
the cost down, “It’s a proven
design based on the existing
689cc 270-degree parallel
twin motor used in the MT-07,
so we are happy to pass on
the saving of not developing
an all-new motor to our
adventure bike customers.”
In comparison to its
competitors, the Ténéré is less
than the KTM 790 Adventure R
($22,695 inclu. ORC), Triumph

800 XCA ($21,300 plus ORC)
and the BMW F 850 GSA
($21,280 inclu. ORC). Despite
being cheaper the Ténéré’s is a
smaller capacity bike and
doesn’t come with the same
tech equipment as standard.
The Ténéré 700 possesses
the basics required for
adventure riding, like an LED
display and switchable ABS but
its lacking features seen on
their competitors such as
traction control, heated grips,
riding modes and auxiliary
ports. When asked if they were
concerned by the spec of the
Ténéré 700, Yamaha
Australia’s Sales and Marketing
Manager, Matt Ferry said, “The
Ténéré 700 is a supremely
off-road capable adventure
