RIB sales and boat club

Agapi has appointed a UK dealer to
launch its range of high-end cabin
RIBs and introduce its global boat
share club to British customers.
Based in Southampton, Williams
Marine and Watersports Ltd will be
the sole importer for Agapi in the UK.
Agapi currently offers two models,
the 800 and 950, both high-quality
outboard-engined cuddy cabin boats.
Williams Marine will have the larger
950 on display at Swanwick Marina
from early April and will be exhibiting
it at the Jersey Boat Show.
Williams Marine will also be the UK
base of the Agapi Boat Club, a boat-
sharing community based around
Agapi models with bases in Mallorca,
Helsinki, Stockholm and Gothenburg.
MBY will be publishing a full UK
test of the Agapi 950 in a future issue
of the magazine.

Holyhead Marina destroyed

Eighty-fi ve boats damaged or sunk by high winds and waves

Fresh funding round for new model

Holyhead Marina on the island
of Anglesea suffered catastrophic
damage when it was hit by a perfect
storm of gale-force north-easterly
winds and exceptionally high spring
tides in March. Most of the marina
infrastructure was destroyed by
the storm causing the total loss
of around 85 boats.
Co-director Geoff Garrod told
MBY, “Our staff battled through
the night to do all that we could,

but eventually we had to close
the marina for safety reasons.”
Heavy-duty pontoons protected
by a floating breakwater were
installed in the harbour in 2001
and have survived numerous
storms since then.
“We’ve regularly seen storm
conditions of Force 10 and even
Force 11 without issues but we’ve
never seen anything quite like
this,” said Garrod.

It was the relentless battering
from the waves whipped up by the
severe winds and high spring tides
that eventually caused the pontoons
to break up.
Thankfully, nobody was hurt and
a huge clear-up operation is now
underway. Debris from wreckage is
strewn along the Anglesea coastline
and pollution has been discovered
up to 26 miles away according to the
Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Glider Yachts is hoping to attract
investors for a new funding round
that will enable it to build a larger
version of its innovative gliding yacht.
The British company launched
its first boat, the 18m Super Sports

18 last year. After receiving
‘overwhelming interest’ in the SS
at the Monaco Yacht Show, Glider
now wants to develop the larger SL
limousine model. This is designed to
accommodate 12 passengers and 2

to be capable of 50 knots.
Riding on two long, slim, ultra-low
drag sponsons powered by waterjet
engines, Glider Yachts claims that
its vessels are up to 50% faster and
more stable than equivalent boats
and 60% more fuel efficient, as well
as reducing wave motions felt on
board by up to 70%.
CEO Robert McCall says Glider
Yachts has plans for a full range of
models with the SS18 and SL24 at
the smaller end of the scale and a
superyacht sports range from 35m
to 80m at the top end. The company
intends to start building these in 2019.
