Motor Boat & Yachting – May 2018

(singke) #1
We stumbled across this boat tucked
in the corner of one of Düsseldorf’s
many halls and were pleasantly
surprised by what we found. It’s
built in Slovenia using a conventional
semi-planing GRP hull but with an
aluminium and glass superstructure.
This means that instead of the usual
chunky GRP mullions fore and aft, it
has much slimmer aluminium pillars
and structural glass that makes for
an exceptionally light saloon with
unencumbered 360º views.
It’s available in coupé or flybridge
designs with a wide range of single or
twin D3 or D4 shaftdrive engines. This
gives it a top speed of just 14-20 knots
but the flip side is fuel consumption
of as little as 10 litres per hour at 10
knots, in other words, 1nm per
litre. Twin stainless-steel fuel
tanks with a combined capacity
of 1,000 litres and solar panels
on the wheelhouse roof (either
side of the central skylights)
means it can cruise for days
or even weeks on end without
needing to stop for fuel.
Down below, you can either
opt for two generous double
ensuite cabins or a three-cabin

layout that puts the owner’s suite
forward with a twin and small double
occupying the midships section. Deep
bulwarks, walkaround decks and a side
door next to the helm make it a safe,
easy boat to move around on, while
single or twin stub keels should ensure
steady handling and a stable ride.

We’re big fans of Rand’s little electric
Picnic boats which potter about in
near silence. Now the young Danish
brand is stepping up a gear with
a larger, faster, sportier big sister.
It’s still possible to have the Leisure
28 fitted with electric power (from
a 50kW outboard up to a 150kW
inboard) for use on lakes and rivers
but for longer coastal trips, there’s an
equally wide choice of petrol or diesel

engines to choose from. We like
the sound of the 260hp MerCruiser
diesel, which should give a top speed
of around 40 knots and fuel-efficient
cruising in the low thirties.
The prototype at Düsseldorf was
still a bit rough around the edges
but Rand assures us this will all be
cleaned up long before it reaches
production. It certainly looked the
part, and the long open cockpit with

a good spread of seating and small
wet bar ticks all the right boxes.
Rand didn’t finish the cuddy and
small heads compartment in time for
the show but once sorted, they should
come in handy for overnight stays.
A light but stiff vacuum-infused
hull should make for an entertaining
ride while the dark grey hull and
near-vertical bow gives it the slightly
menacing air of a stealth boat.
