EDITORIAL

It doesn’t seem right to compare something as exciting as a
foiling powerboat with something as big and heavy as a bus, but
seriously, I’ve been waiting 15 years for one to come along without
so much as a sniff. Then, all of a sudden, five turn up at once.
In the last few weeks, Sunreef, SEAir, Enata Marine and Galeon
have all either launched or announced foiling powerboats, but
the news that’s really caused eyebrows to pop is the revelation
that Princess Yachts is planning to launch a high-tech active
foiling system on its new R35 sportsboat (see p12).
As the name suggests, this isn’t a fixed set-and-forget
system. The foils will be constantly monitored and adjusted
by a computer to suit the sea conditions and the demands
of the driver. This means that the foils won’t just make the
boat faster and more efficient, they should make it ride and
handle better too. In that respect, AFS acts more like the
active suspension and aerodynamics package of a McLaren
P1 supercar than a traditional hydrofoil – a comparison that
won’t be lost on Princess’s executive chairman Antony Sheriff,
who used to be McLaren’s MD!
If this is all starting to sound a little esoteric for the ‘average’
cruising boat owner, bear in mind that this kind of compact
retractable foil system could be equally if not more beneficial
on larger, heavier craft where the potential gains are even bigger.
The Princess foiling system doesn’t try to lift the entire hull
out of the water, it just reduces the drag so that the boat performs
like a craft half its weight and size. The R35 may be the first
beneficiary of AFS, but how long before we see it on a V
or P68? Maybe that bus comparison isn’t so
far off the mark after all.
