Motor Boat & Yachting – May 2018

(singke) #1
Featuring all-new design language and
the largest master cabin ever on a Sea
Ray of this size, the new 520 is a boat
with generous living spaces at its core.
There is a three-cabin option, but it
has two spacious ensuite doubles as
standard to give each cabin a generous
chunk of the available floorspace.
Part of the reason why there is so
much living space below is the use of

pods, specifically Cummins QSC
8.3 574hp diesels with Zeus drives.
The interior appears fresh and
modern, with less of the traditional
dark wood and heavy furnishing
that many American boats have.
The aft-galley layout on the main
deck sits between the saloon and
cockpit, with sliding doors granting
easy access between the two main

living areas. However, it’s worth noting
there is a step amidships.
The aft seating is modular and can
slide fore and aft, and the wet bar is
located on the transom to make the
most of the space inside the cockpit.

Plenty of people used to scoff at these
strange-looking craft but with sales
climbing steadily, a fast-expanding
range and a newly appointed UK
dealer, the last laugh is on them.
The 52 is the latest model to arrive,
following hot on the heels of the
58 launched at Cannes last year.
Its modular construction and
simple rectangular shape means
the interior can be adapted to suit
a number of different layouts. All
the accommodation is on one level
and there’s an open-plan living/
dining/galley area aft, with either
three or four cabins forward of it.
The example on show at Düsseldorf
had three cabins, with the master
suite forward. This isn’t as spectacular
as the 58’s, which feels more like
a presidential suite than a boat cabin,
but waking up with a view out over
the sea and your own open-air terrace
to breakfast on is still pretty special.
Unlike the original 44 we tested
a couple of years back, the 52 has
a proper central helm station on the
vast flybridge and a pair of punchy
330hp engines. It will max out at
a very respectable 20 knots and
cruise comfortably in the mid teens.

Overblue 52

It’s still a Marmite boat that some will
love and some will hate, but there’s
no getting around the fact that
as a spacious second home with
an infinite choice of stunning
waterside locations, it takes
some beating.
