News & Notes

In May, iNavX launched its newest feature: AIS integration.
This is a game-changer for phone/tablet navigators. While iNavX
had already accepted and integrated lots of NMEA 2000 data via
wi-fi, their AIS integration doesn’t require an onboard transponder.
Since iNavX utilizes an existing and expanding network of land-
based antennas that collect AIS data, users need only connect their
device to a data source (mobile data or an onboard data solution)
to receive the information on their iNavX-enabled devices.
Allowing for AIS access without the cost of a full transponder
setup is significant in itself, but iNavX AIS also adds great
backup and redundancy to existing navigational systems. The
new feature allows users to navigate and gain ship heading and
speed data without radar or an AIS transponder. While data
is limited to places where you can connect your device to the
internet, this development still revolutionizes navigation for
near-shore operations. More: inavx.com

ZIMMERMAN MARINE EXPANDS TO CHARLESTON
Zimmerman Marine will be opening a service operation in
Charleston, South Carolina, in mid-July 2018. Charleston Harbor
Marina will serve as the base of operations for a mobile service
for the surrounding area.
Company president (and regular PassageMaker contributor)
Steve Zimmerman commented, “Charleston complements our
existing service network perfectly. Transient cruisers can stay
within our service family from Charleston, South Carolina, all the
way to Herrington Harbour in Maryland. With five yards in four
states all sharing one database, we can seamlessly service cruisers
as they make their way along the mid-Atlantic coast.”
Zimmerman Marine, now in its 38th year of operation,
has existing locations in Southport, North Carolina; Mathews,
Virgina; Deltaville, Virginia; and at Herrington Harbour in Deale,
Maryland. More: zimmermanmarine.com
