For family time there’s no better place than a yacht.

Take this togetherness and max the fun factor

with these at-sea activities, says Kate Lardy

Have an adventure

From the ultra-creative mind of explorer Niel Fox comes
a company that takes the rarefied world of yachting and
makes it even more extraordinary. Among other services, his
company, Based On A True Story, choreographs adventures
for clients that can be children-led or involve the whole
family. It’s like a treasure hunt on steroids as guests are swept
into a magical fantasy world that follows a yacht’s itinerary.
“Something happens early on in the trip, a catalyst that
completely changes the whole dynamic of what they thought
they would be doing. It can be wholly consuming or occupy
an hour a day,” says Fox, whose staf work with the yacht’s
captain to plan the itinerary and come along to ensure
everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.
A mermaid may deliver a gift, for example, that leads the
children into a mythical world where magic is dying out and
so are all the mythological creatures, so it’s up to the kids
to save them. That particular adventure culminated at
a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with hundreds of actors and
extras dressed as dwarfs, giants and magicians. Fox shares
this just as an example, though, for the company only creates
original experiences.
Older teens and those in their 20s crave action and
surprise, he says. “We create scenarios where they can’t just
sit at anchor any more, they have to get the hell out. Something
needs to be done!” basedonatruestory.co.uk
