Host an art exhibition
As well as ofering children crew duties,Starfire, the 54m Benetti, hosts “art on the ocean”
classes during a charter, setting up easels on the beach with crew-led instruction in painting
the scenery or an object found nearby.
On one occasion, the crew took this to the next level, inviting the children as “professional
artists” to organise, host and cater for their own art exhibition. “It was something they worked
on every day to plan,” says chief stewardess Gemma Heyns. They discussed the menu with
the chef, created their signature cocktail to be served at the party, made invitations and hired
bouncers [crew members] to work the door and control the crowds.
“It was an amazing party,” says Heyns. “The children talked about their artwork, read
stories from their daily diary and even made a speech thanking their doting fans. The parents
were impressed with just how much their children had been doing.”starfirelifestyle.com

What better way to work on language skills
than cruising to foreign lands, helped along
by an onboard tutor? Sea Tutors, a branch
of Tutors International, provides vetted
instructors versed in yacht etiquette and
adept at absorbing the local culture into
their lessons. As the company specialises
in placing tutors for the long-term rather
than for, say, a week’s charter, it is ideal for
those spending the entire summer holidays
on board, perhaps cruising the western
Med while honing their French and Italian.

Step into the past

Mediterranean cruising lends itself to history lessons, with all those amazing Roman ruins,
so why not introduce your children to a lifelong love of history and Italy, suggests Emily
FitzRoy of Bellini Travel. The company has expert English-speaking tutors who can meet
families on board and take children to explore Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. “All tours
are bespoke and adapted to each child’s age,” says FitzRoy. “Colouring books, treasure hunts
and characters in costumes are just some of the experiences Bellini has created to ensure an
unforgettable, educational and, most of all, fun time in La Bella Italia.” bellinitravel.com
