Boat International - July 2018

If I hadtopickonewordthatcomesupmost
frequently in conversation with superyacht
owners,charterersanddesigners,itwouldbe
“family”. A yacht is a home from home, and what
is home without family? Home on board means
a place where children want to actually be with
their parents (a novelty for anyone with teens),
a rare stretch of time when activities trump
tech, and a place where old and young come
togetherandcreatememoriesthatlast.Butitis
not without its challenges. For those who want to
home school at sea (and there are many), there
are hurdles – for example, how does the tutor fit
into crew hierarchy (see page 140)? For those
designingayachtforyoungones,thesame
applies – vertical railings rule, according to one
designer, to avoid intrepid climbers ending up
overboard (page 136). For those with small kids,
dressingthemisstillajoyratherthanafight,and
my favourite tip in this issue is our guide to
“junior cool”. If only Dolce & Gabbana made
their kids’ collection in mother sizes.

Arriverderci Firenze. The World Superyacht
Awards took their third and final waltz around the
Italian city in May and as ever with the world’s
most prestigious superyacht ceremony there was
plenty of surprise, delight and the occasional
upset as the winners were revealed (see page 97).
Huge congratulations to every category winner

  • the Neptune trophies you took home mean all
the more because they were decided by an
independent panel of superyacht owners. One
judge alone visited 33 of the 68 entries; they take
their job very, very seriously. Feadship had a great
night, scooping four awards. The design studio
RWD was popping the champagne, too, being
involved in two winners – Hasna and Faith. But a
special mention to the owner of the Sanlorenzo
Seven Sins, who collected his award on the night
of his 75th birthday (and even got a rendition of
“Happy Birthday” from the entire room). So
where are the Awards heading in 2019? London.
We hope to see many of you there.
