Step 6 Main washes
1 Returning to my original sketch, I painted
the central brick section with a weak wash
of yellow ochre and a touch of quinacridone
red. I worked quickly and loosely, in keeping
with my drawing style and not worrying too
much if I hit the lines or not.

t

2 I added a little French ultramarine blue
to grey the mix and used it for the wings
and stone chimneys, varying the washes in
places to add character and interest.
3 With a slightly stronger brick mix I
painted the roofs and brick chimneys,

adding a touch of the blue for darker
areas.
4 I used a mix of primary yellow and
French ultramarine blue for the shrubs
and, as planned, added just a narrow strip
of lawn to help ground the building.

1 When the main washes were dry, I
pencilled in the outline of the shadows
and painted them with a watery mix of
French ultramarine blue and quinacridone
red. Both these colours are transparent so
they allowed the original washes to show
through a little.
2 Using the tip of my brush, I added

shadows under the gutters and
architectural feature lines then in the
windows, doors and shrubs.
3 To finish, I added a few highlights
with a white gel pen, mainly on the
roofs and chimneys, but kept these to
a minimum for best effect.
