Step 5 Surface
colours
Begin to add the
wonderful rich sand
colours of the beach,
bearing in mind that
you want to achieve a
few objectives from this
stage. First, you want
lovely reflections and
bring out the wetness of
the sand. Secondly, look
for a little movement;
this comes from angles,
perhaps from shingle
or rope on the beach.

Step 6 Finishing touches
I love adding the little marks and detail to finish a painting,
perhaps throwing in a figure or two. I use these marks as a way to
draw the viewer into the focal point. A good composition is essential
in any painting, and with such a small amount of content, we have
to do this with light and the shapes that we create. I find this way of
painting more creative when you don’t have to focus on the detail.
