RESULTS

pinpoint forehand down the line,
pumping his fist in delight at such a
hard-earned win.
“I thought I did well,” Murray said.
“He served unbelievably well in the first
set and I had very few chances when I
was returning.
“But when he was creating opportu-
nities on my serve, I stayed strong. I
played a really solid tie-break and, in

the second set, I served well while he
dropped a little bit.
“Once I was in the rallies, I felt like I
was dictating a lot of the points. It was
a good performance.”
Tsitsipas, 23, was beaten in the final
of the French Open last year by Novak
Djokovic and has reached four other
grand slam semi-finals, but has yet to
shine on grass. He has not progressed

beyond the first round of Wimbledon
since he made the round of 16 as a
19-year-old in 2018, losing out in
straight sets to John Isner.
It was the first meeting between the
players since Murray accused Tsitsipas
of gamesmanship during the Greek’s
five-set victory in the first round of the
US Open last year. Tsitsipas had gone
for a toilet break that lasted almost

Murray’s win was his first over a top-five player since he defeated Novak Djokovic, then the world No 2, in the 2016 ATP Finals

eight minutes before the start of the
fifth set at Flushing Meadows, one of
several breaks in play he instigated,
which Murray felt had come at
tactically opportune moments.
“Every single time it was before my
serve,” Murray said at the time. “I rate
him a lot. But I have zero time for that
stuff at all, and I lost respect for him.”
Later, he tweeted: “It takes Stefanos
Tsitsipas twice as long to go the
bathroom as it takes Jeff Bezos to fly
into space.” Two months later, the ATP
tightened up the rules, restricting toilet
breaks to one per match for a maximum
of three minutes, which was seen as a
minor win for Murray.
He earned a victory of a different
kind over Tsitsipas yesterday, although
the match did not last long enough
for either player to require a toilet
break. Murray reached another semi-
final on grass in the Challenger Tour
event in Surbiton last week, losing to
Denis Kudla, but this is a much more
significant step before he plays at
Queen’s next week.
Dan Evans, the British No 2, has made
it through to the semi-finals of the
Rothesay Open in Nottingham,
defeating Marc-Andrea Huesler, the
world No 123 from Switzerland, 6-4, 6-4.
He will play Jack Sock, the world No 110
from the United States, today in the
semi-final of an event he won in 2019.
Harriet Dart, the British No 3, was
beaten 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 by the American
Alison Riske in the last eight of the
women’s event in Nottingham. In her
first WTA Tour quarter-final, Dart, 25,
the world No 114, won the first set
before the class of Riske, ranked 74
places higher, eventually told.
