The Essay
Radio 3, 10.45pm
This week five writers are
going on five journeys in
search of the final resting
places of their literary heroes.
On Monday Lauren Elkin
visited Oscar Wilde’s tomb in
Père Lachaise, Paris, and
yesterday Paul Muldoon went
to the poet WB Yeats’s grave
on the west coast of Ireland.
Tonight Diana Souhami steps
into the tomb of the writer
Radclyffe Hall, right, in
London’s Highgate, where the
author of the seminal lesbian

novel The Well of Loneliness
rests with her lover, her
lover’s husband and their
dog Tulip. All of which, if you
know Radclyffe Hall’s work,
will feel appropriately
unconventional. Ben Dowell
