She is an associate professor at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at
CUNY and also teaches at the City College of New York in Harlem. Her cover article on
forced sterilization is adapted from her book, ‘‘Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism
on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation,’’ which will be published on June- ‘‘I had heard of the Relf sisters and their traumatic sacrifice that changed history but
never knew what became of them,’’ Villarosa says. ‘‘I felt a mix of joy and anger when
I was finally able to meet these two lovely women and was faced with the enormity of
the injustice done to them.’’
