Is McAfee Stinger a PUP?

Q

Before installing tools
on my USB stick as
explained in Issue 630’s
Cover Feature, I scanned my
computer with McAfee Stinger
(www.snipca.com/41531), which
you recommended in the same
feature. Having restarted my
computer later, I noticed a McAfee
shield on my taskbar that wasn’t there
previously. When I hovered over it, it was
called ‘Real Protect’ or similar. Right-
clicking showed an option to remove it,
which I did. But I now see permanent
‘Update’ options when I go to shut down.
These are obviously a result of using
Stinger because I have run nothing else
on this machine since deciding to follow
your article. So, is McAfee Stinger a PUP?
Neil Tait

A

Happily, we can confirm that
McAfee Stinger is definitely
not a PUP. It’s listed as safe by
VirusTotal (www.virustotal.com) and
doesn’t attempt to add any unwanted
tools when you install it. ‘Real Protect’ is
just McAfee’s tool for monitoring what
happens on your computer, and is what
Stinger is built on. They’re effectively
one and the same thing.
Neil’s problem with persistent
‘Update’ options sounds like a fault
with Windows Update, and is unlikely
to have been caused by McAfee. We’d
suggest running the Windows Update
troubleshooter to see if that fixes the
problem. Click ‘Start’, Settings, Update &
Security, Troubleshoot, then click
‘Additional troubleshooters’. Click the
Windows Update option, then ‘Run the
troubleshooter’ and follow the steps.

Where’s Vivaldi’s button for
installing brower extensions?

Q

I tried to install the CookieBlock
extension to my Vivaldi browser
(Issue 630, page 42), so visited
http://www.snipca.com/41493 to go to the
Chrome Web Store. But I couldn’t see
an install button. Can you help?
Peter Ratcliffe

A

Assuming you’re using the latest
version of Vivaldi, you should
see an ‘Add to Chrome’ button
when you visit the CookieBlock
extension’s page in the Chrome Web
Store. Clicking this (even though you’re
using Vivaldi instead of Chrome) will
install the extension.
If you’re not seeing this button, it’s
likely that a privacy setting is blocking
you from installing extensions from the
Chrome Web Store. In Vivaldi, click the
Menu button (the top-left ‘V’ icon) and
select Settings. Now click Privacy on the
left, and look under Google Extensions at
the top of the right-hand pane. If the Web
Store option here is unticked, this could
be the problem. Click to enter a tick in
the box (see screenshot below), then
close the browser and restart it.
Try installing CookieBlock again. If you
still can’t see ‘Add to Chrome’, try
deleting any extensions you’ve got
installed. To do this, click the Menu
button and select Tools, then Extensions.

Why can’t I save Windows
to my USB stick?

Q

I followed the instructions in
Issue 630’s Cover Feature (‘Run
Anything From a USB Stick’),
but can’t save Windows or Zorin to my
USB stick. Neither of them appear under
‘Boot selection’ in Rufus. What am I
doing wrong?
Austin Myall

A

Several readers have had
problems running Windows
from a USB stick, and we’ll
admit that it can be a little fiddly.
Helpfully, Austin sent us a screenshot of
Rufus to illustrate his problem. From
what we can tell, it looks like he may
have clicked the down arrow to the right
of the Select button, rather than the
Select button itself.
The down arrow just lets you choose
between selecting an ISO file from your
computer or downloading one from the
web, so ignore this. Clicking ‘Select’
itself (see screenshot above) will open a
window that lets you browse your drive
for where you downloaded either the
Windows or Zorin ISO file – in most
cases, this will be your Downloads folder.
Click the ISO file to select it, then click
the Open button.
Now you should see the relevant ISO
file shown under ‘Boot selection’.

Ensure Vivaldi’s Web Store option is ticked in
privacy settings to install Chrome extensions

Click the Select button in Rufus (not the down arrow
next to it) and browse for the ISO file you want to use
