high-definition video: 1280x720
pixels.

8K Video with a resolution of
7680x4320 pixels. Currently the

Admin mode Allows you to make
changes to a computer that will
affect other people who use it.

Airplane mode Phones and
tablets in this mode disable all
radio communication (GSM,
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc) so they are
safe to use on aircraft.

APK Android Package Kit. The
file format Android uses to install
apps.

Aspect ratio A measurement of
the shape of a display. Traditional
computer screens are 4:3.
Widescreen displays are 16:9 or
16:10.

Bandwidth A measure of how
much data can be transferred
through a connection at one time.

.bak The extension for backup files.

Benchmarking Comparing
software and products with an
accepted standard.

Cache A temporary space for
storing information. Can be
memory used on a computer
processor, or space on a hard drive
used by a web browser.

Cast To send content from your
PC to TV.

cd/m 2 Candela per square metre.
Standard unit of brightness.

Code Describes the various
programming languages used to
create programs.

Colorimeter A tool for measuring
the colour accuracy of monitors by
calibrating its brightness, contrast
and colour.

Contrast ratio A measure of the
difference between the darkest
and lightest possible shades
shown by a screen. Screens with
higher contrast ratios are good
for watching movies or playing
games.

Cookie A small text file stored on
your computer by a website. Used
to store browsing preferences,
website log-in details and so on.

Core Units on a processor that
carry out program instructions.

CSV Comma Separated Value.
A standard file format, used for
storing tabulated information,
that can be opened by most
spreadsheet programs.

DCI-P3 A colour space that has a
wider spectrum than sRGB. Used
by US film industry.

Defragment To reorganise the
data stored on a hard drive so files
are stored in one piece and can
be accessed quickly. Sometimes
shortened to defrag.

DisplayPort A new socket for
connecting monitors.

D j Vu File format designed to store
scanned documents that may
include text, line drawings, colour
images and photographs.

DOCX The default file format used
by Word 2007 and later.

Driver A file that tells Windows how
to work with an external device.

Drive image File containing the
contents and structure of an entire
data storage device - a hard drive,
for example.

Emoji A small graphic that can be
inserted into a text message or
email.

Encode To convert media files to
a new format, such as WAV audio
files to MP3.

EXE A program file designed
to run in Windows. Has the file
extension .exe.

File path Shows the location of a
file within Windows.

Firewall A piece of software
or hardware that prevents
unauthorised access to a computer
over a network, such as the internet.

Fps Frames per second.
Normally used to indicate gaming
performance.

GHz Gigahertz. A measure of
how many instructions a chip can
process per second. 1GHz is equal
to 1,000MHz.

Gigabit Internet connection
offering speeds of at least 1Gbps
(1,000Mbps).

Gigabit Ethernet A very fast
networking standard that can
transfer data at up to 1,000Mbps.

Gorilla glass Scratch-resistant
glass that’s used to protect the
screens of tablets and phones.

Graphics card A component in a
computer that produces the image
shown on the monitor.

HDMI High-definition media
interface. A type of connection that
transmits high-definition video and
audio signals.

Hz Hertz. Measures the frequency
something happens: 1Hz equals
once a second.

IMAP Internet Message Access
Protocol. A method for email that
lets the user manage messages
stored on a remote server.

IP address Internet Protocol
address. A unique set of numbers
used to identify computers and
websites on the internet.

IPS A screen technology.
Monitors that use it have wider
viewing angles and better, more
accurate-looking colours than
monitors that do not use this
technology.

ISO file A type of image file that
contains all the data from a CD or
DVD.

LCD Liquid-crystal display. The
technology used to create almost
all flatscreen monitors.

LED Light-emitting diode. An
electronic device that emits light.
Used on almost all electronic
devices, and to provide the
backlight for some LCDs.

Macro An automated series of
commands or options that can
be run at any time. Handy if you
often need to perform repetitive
actions.

Macro lens Lets you take sharp,
detailed, close-up photos of small
objects.

MicroSD card A small type of
memory card. Can be converted to
SD size using an adapter.

NAS Network-attached storage. A
hard drive attached to a network
that can be shared with other PCs.

OCR Optical character recognition.
The process by which printed text
is scanned and converted into
documents that can be edited.

Open source Software that can
be modified by anyone, rather
than just by the employees of the
company that created it.

Plain text Text in a document that
doesn’t contain any formatting,
such as bold characters and italics.

POP3 Post Office Protocol 3. A
system for remotely accessing and
retrieving email from an ISP. Most
email applications and ISPs use
POP3.

PSTN Public switched telephone
network. Traditional phone
infrastructure that uses landlines.

PUP Potentially unwanted
program. A program that may
not be desired, despite the
user consenting to it being
downloaded. Examples include
unnecessary plug-ins, toolbars
and browser hijackers.

P WA Progressive web app. A
website that looks and works
like an app, which you can
install on computers, phones
and tablets.

QR code Quick Response code.
A barcode that can be read using
smartphones and dedicated QR-
reading devices.

RAM Random-access memory.
The computer’s working area,
used for data storage while the
PC is switched on. Its capacity is
measured in megabytes (MB):
the more memory your PC has,
the more things it can process
simultaneously and the faster it
will seem. Any information in RAM
will be lost when the power is
switched off.
