hurricanes and the growing
cost of rebuilding. An imme-
diate option is to upgrade
buildings, which in theory
will limit future damage
and reduce insurance pay-
outs. That’s where Florida
may be heading: one of the
new programs gives home-
owners up to $10,000 to
make improvements like
upgrading doors and roofs.
“We haven’t fi gured out a
way to stop a hurricane yet,”
says Nyce. “That means
hardening homes.”
