scimitar-shaped rudder? Cuthbertson said tow tests at the
Stevens Institute of Technology tank showed severe cross
ow that gave the appearance of weather helm, with and
without the rudder in place. “ at told me to absolutely
minimize the connection between the rudder and the hull,”
Cuthbertson said. “ at’s why for years we have a scimitar-
shaped rudder to minimize the breadth of rudder at the
hull to allow the cross ow to pass under the counter
unimpeded.”
C&C’s success didn’t last. Nothing that good ever does, it
seems. e economic vagaries of the early 1980s took their
toll. Cuthbertson had already retired once from running
the company he founded, and a er a rest resumed manage-
ment, nally serving as a director until its dissolution in

  1. Colleagues remember his strong, silent personality,
referring somewhat humorously to him and Cassian as
“Cumbersome and Casual.” He was a big man and could be
imposing. His accomplishments are noted worldwide but
nowhere more appreciated than in his homeland. At the
C&C reunion, Don Green, who won the 1978 Canada’s Cup
in a C&C design named Evergreen, said, “We Canadians too
o en have an inferiority complex, but with C&C, we did it,
    and we won.” —D.S.

We’re Not Skidding

As berglass boats age, replacing nonskid on decks
becomes necessary for safety and good looks. Products
designed for this purpose take several forms: composite
mats glued to the deck
(Treadmaster, SeaDek),
specialty paints o er-
ing a nonslip surface
(KiwiGrip, Evercoat),
paints incorporating
pre-mixed granules
(Tu Coat), and addi-
tives to deck paints
either by mixing before
application, or broad-
casting onto wet paint
after the paint has
been applied (Awl-
grip, Pettit, Interlux).
Such products may also
be applicable for cer-
tain new construction
projects.
Having refurbished several decks over the years that had
either worn-down molded nonskid or damage, and having
tested a wide variety of products for ease of application and

Surveyor John Lowe, who used
SoftSand on all deck surfaces (above)
during restoration of his 1979 Fortier
