So Sand, which is actually a rubber-type product. e key,
says So Sand’s Van Macomb, is that most modern deck
paints are exible coatings, allowing rigid or hard particles
to “work” and loosen. Rubber-type particles are also
minutely exible, moving with the paint, as it were, and
thereby ensuring a longer e ective life span. Another
advantage is that rubber is less abrasive on bare skin than
some of the harder products.
So Sand rubber particles can be either pre-mixed with
the paint or broadcast manually onto wet paint. Macomb
recommends using a saltshaker. So Sand is available in four
textures: coarse, medium, ne, and ultra- ne, with medium
being the most popular. Surveyor John Lowe told us he has
used the product on his personal 1979 Fortier 26, saying it
has held up well and “does not hold dirt or blood and is easy
on the feet.”

METAL SHARK
The press release also states, “A patented hydraulic/
electric rebound system, which consists of actuators inside
and outside of the vessel, allows the drive to smoothly and
automatically adapt to conditions. When the drive impacts
a solid object, such as a log, stump, or other submerged
hazard, it swi ly ‘kicks up’ so that the propeller will not be
impacted. e system then exerts reverse pressure to instan-
taneously return the drive to its normal trim position as
soon as the object has been cleared.”

Boaters on the Atlantic and Paci c oceans, the Great Lakes, and
most inland lakes won’t need a Swamp Shark–driven boat, but
hunters and shermen in Louisiana who mess around in the
shallow, vegetation-choked bayous will nd the “rebound” drive
system from Metal Shark very versatile.
