equipment. Brent Brown, the “great
laminator” whose gel time tests I
observed, has 37 years of experience.

Lazzara’s impact on this part of
Florida, on boatbuilding in general,
goes beyond the physical plant and

expandable/retractable mold Dick cre-
ated now sits in a eld down the road
a piece. e 5-axis router the brothers
bought sat idle for the intervening
years until Blackwell and his crew got
it up and running again, along with
the 3-axis Homag CNC cutter. e
buildings remain as they were, though
Truslow said a lot of cleanup was
required before work could begin
inside. ey repainted nearly every-
thing and rebuilt the cranes and
o ces. “Dick did a lot of good things,”
Truslow said, well aware of what he
inherited. “It was a beautiful straight-
line-production building.”
Gavio Group bought the building
in August 2016 from an investor
who’d purchased it from the bank;
and hull No. 1 of the 35 was out the
door by end of the year. e 800'
(244m) of waterfront and the Travel-
i s remain, key to Bertram’s burgeon-
ing service business.

A 5-axis router, employed by Lazzara Marine, was refurbished to tool small parts.
