E

very busy autumn boat-show sea-
son is an opportunity to see new
designs, models, ideas, and hardware
from the boatbuilding industry.
Some times those new approaches are
e ective and attractive, while other
innovations and details are less than
stellar. As I wander the marinas and
docks looking closely at the o erings,
I o en nd myself wondering, “Why
didn’t I think of that?” or, “Why the
heck did they do that?” I see bad old

ideas rear their ugly heads, reinvented
and repeated. I also see old and persis-
tent problems intelligently resolved,
or simple, high-quality instances of
good standard boatbuilding prac-
tices. Every set of eyes that looks over
a boat at a boat show belongs to a
potential customer. For that reason
alone, what’s on display should be of
the best quality.
Lets take a look at what builders had
on the docks in 2017.

Fall boat shows and crowded docks yield a wealth of

instructive examples of what boatbuilders

do well...and not so well.
