In her aim to show the emotionally significant layers of
a scene, Sharma goes through multitudes of feelings
and interpretations in her photographs. Much of this
interpretation comes down to the viewer. One can
choose to see the face and its features, the clothes
and its colours—or one can decide to see the symbolic
significance and the emotions behind the portrait.


As a photographer, Sharma strives to create a bridge
between the viewer and the subject, and this is done by
leading the audience into interpreting each image. Be it
a building, natural landscape, a child or a portrait, her
photographs are unsparing yet beautiful. Her subjects
display the rawness and the humble nature of the
world and the human condition as examined through a
lens. Sharma wants to show her photographs as she
sees them with her own eyes—she intends to remove


the barrier that often obscures interactions between
viewer and subject.

poverty and social inequality in black and white.

principles throughout her photography. She employs a
generally centered composition with bold lighting,
enhancing features and drawing the attention of the
viewer towards the focus points of the photo. Strong
graphic imagery is a staple in her work, and that
coupled with a vibrant twist and an adaptable outlook
creates eye-catching, cohesive pictures. Be it a
photograph of people or places, nature or a city,
Sharma manages to adapt her approach.

Stark simplicity and an unrelenting focus build a strong
bridge between the subject and the audience. In Riya
Sharma's methods, the artist captures light and colors
in an engaging manner, all of which contributes to
establishing intercultural dialogs. Her approach allows
the final product to give the illusion of looking through
