servedin the UnitedStatesArmyfrom
1953-55spendingapproximately18 months
in Europe.Grey was avery talentedbaseball
player,particularlyas aleft-handedpitcher,
and wasfortunatein beingchosento rep-
resentabaseballteamwithinthe 7th Army
in Europeand wasassignedto playbase-
ball for the Armyand entertainthe troops
throughoutGermany,Austria,Italy and oth-
er areasof Europe.ThankfullyGreydid not
haveto takeup armswhileservingin the
Army.His uniformincludedagloveand a
baseball.He turneddownseveral offers
to playprofessionalminorleaguebaseball
beforepursuingan almost30-yearcareer
withthe FBI, retiringas aDeputyAssistant
Director.Heservedas aSpecialAgentin a
numberoflocationsthroughoutthecoun-
try includingsupervisorypositionsas Chief
Inspectorand SpecialAgentin Charge.He

was transferredto FBI Headquarterson four
differentoccasionsand servedin five differ-
ent divisions.Hewent on to haveasecond
careerasaVicePresidentandDirectorof
Corporate Securityfor the MellonCorpora-
tion in Pittsburgh,PA.
Followinghis secondretirement,he and
his wife,Eva, weresnowbirdsin south-
westFloridaandspentthe remainderof
eachyearin Warrenton,VA.Duringhis 20
yearsinWarrenton,itwascleartoallwho
visitedhowmuchhe lovedbeingoutdoors
and maintainingthe property,keepingit in
pristinecondition.One of his favoritetimes
inWarrentonwaswhenallofthechildren
andgrandchildrengatheredtogetherand
spentweeksat atime throughoutthe year,
sharingtheloveofhisproperty,thegarden,
thelake,theraspberries,thecherrytree,
the mowing,the fishingand the boatingat
the homethatwe lovinglycalled“Camp
Cannonball”.WhilespendingtimeinFlorida,
he enjoyedwatchinghis grandsonsplay la-
crosse,soccer,footballand basketball.Grey
playedseniorsoftballon atravelingchampi-
onshipsoftballteamthroughoutFloridaand
the Mid-Atlanticstates.
He is survivedby his wife,Eva PriceBrock-
man,after 66 yearsofmarriage.Heisalso
survivedby threechildren:Beth Newell

(Michael)of Sterling,VA,Randall Brockman

she wouldassistotherswith theirworkouts.
Rosewas devotedto her Familyand many
othercausesincludingMealson Wheels,
RedCrossandshelovedanimals.Rose
learnedto scubadiveand snowski. She
wenton a10-daywhitewaterraftingtrip
downthe Colorado Riverwhenshe was in
her 60’sand traveledto the Amazonin her
70’s. Rosehad astrongconnectionto her
religionand one highlightof her life was
beingableto travelto Israel to see where
Christlivedand preached.

sharpwit and wasnevershy in speaking
her mind.

He cherishedhis timewithfriendsand fam-

enjoyedsailingand boating,fosteringand
volunteeringat the SPCAcaringfor dogs

met his wifeof 70 years,Ruth Ward Gibson,
whoprecededhim in deathin 2017.They
raised threechildrenin Cheverly,MD: Phillip
(Barbara)Davis,Bradley(Deborah)Davisand
Marla(Barco)Davidson.Bob wasthe proud
grandfatherof six and great-grandfatherof
10.
Bob had along aerospacecareerdevelop-
ing missileand satellitesystems,leadingto
hispre-retirementjobattheGoddardSpace
FlightCenterplanningSpaceShuttlemis-
sionsto repairNASAsatellites.
Bob was passionateaboutthe sportof ten-
nis,achievingthe levelof MasterProfession-
al and, in 2016,he was inductedinto the US
ProfessionalTennisAssociation’sMid-Atlan-
tic Hall of Fame.Whereverhe workedand
lived,Bob left atrail of tenniscourtsthat he
designedand built.
In his nineties,Bob becamean authorand
publishedabook detailingthe designand
constructionof his personalbackyard
tenniscourt.Thenlast year,atage 100,he
published“FollowMy Path,”abookabout
his engineeringcareerintendedas amen-
toringguideforyoungpeoplestartingtheir
careers.
Acelebrationof life will be plannedfor later
this summer.

cis “Frank” andPaulineScheckenbachin
Bridgeton,NJ on August12, 1945. Growing
up on the farm,she receivedapianoat a
youngage and by her teensplayedthe pi-
ano and organat the BridgetonImmaculate
ConceptionCatholicChurch.She attended

TrentonStateCollege,and in 2018,received
her Baccalaureateof SciencefromAveMa-
ria and BarryUniversityin Historyand Polit-
ical Science.Nancyretiredfromthe United
StatesGovernmentas aGM-15,servingher
countrypatrioticallyfor 32 years.Nancy
wasaMasterGardenerand lateran Asso-
ciateOrganistat St. Andrewssince2006.
At St. Andrews,Nancywason the finance
committee,abenefactorof the St. Andrews
Schooland amemberof the SouthwestFlor-
ida Chapterof the AmericanGuildof Organ-
ists.She was along timeresidentof Spring-
field,VA,Elizabeth City,NCand CapeCoral,
FL. Sheenjoyedmusic,travelingandthe
arts,gardening,cooking,drivingsportscars,
politics,her dogsand catsand manyother
simplepleasures.She is survivedby her lov-
ing son ScottFlynnand his sweetheartKaty

BetteHanson,aMinnesotantrainedto be
an operasinger,foundher life role in the
tumultuoustheaterof civil rightsin Birming-
ham,Alabama.She diedon May2, 2022at
the age of 95, surroundedby love,tranquil-
ity,and threeadoringdogs.Bette had lived
in Washington,DC,for over20 yearsbefore
movingto her son’shomeon LakeAnnaat
the outsetof the pandemic.
BornBeverlyJane Johnsonon August10,
1926,the only childof ReubenBainesJohn-
son and Norwegian-bornKnudenaKnudsen
Johnson,Bettewas raisedin Duluth,Min-
nesotaandplayedviolawiththe Duluth
Symphonywhilestill astudentat Denfeld
HighSchool.Shealsostudiedvoiceand
in 1944wentto the Universityof Iowaon
amusicscholarship.Thereshemether
futurehusband,RogerW. Hansonof Rake,
Iowa,who was thenin medicalschool.After
theirmarriagein 1948,theymovedto Los
Angeles,whereRogercompletedhis Ph.D.
in pharmacologyand zoologyat UCLA.Bette
studiedoperaonscholarshipat the music
academyin SantaBarbaraofthe celebrated
Germansoprano LotteLehmann.
AfterRogerwasrecruitedin 1953to the
newUniversityof Alabamain Birmingham
to help buildwhatwouldbecomeone of the
country’sforemostmedicalcenters,heand
Bettefoundthemselvesamongacohortof
“outsideagitators”defyingthe racial status
quoin whatMartinLutherKingJr.would
call the mostsegregatedcity in America.
As membersof the state’sonly functioning
biracialorganization,thesewhiteliberals
actedon theirconscienceat atime whenig-
noringthe colorline broughtthemwarnings
fromblackjack-bearingKu KluxKlansmen
underthe escortof the Birminghampolice.
Bettebuiltan independentcareerplaying
violafor the BirminghamSymphonyOrches-
traand takingstarringrolesin civicproduc-
tionsrangingfromMadamButterflyto Annie
Get Your Gun.It waswhenshe wasgiven
her ownlocaltelevisionand radio shows
that she foundfameand at timesnotoriety
as the mediapersonality“BetteLee.” She
turnedthe “women’saffairs”beataway
fromfashionand foodand into aplatform
of seriousnews,coveringlegalizedabor-
tion in Scandinavia,aPlannedParenthood
bus clinicservingrural counties,and Japa-
nese-American relations post-Hiroshima.

Betteevendid abroadcastin flightfroman
Air Force jet and, to coverthe CubanMissile
Crisisin 1962,movedinto afalloutshelterat
the statefairgroundswithher mother.
Bette’sbiggestjournalist challengewas
gettingthe city’sdefiningissue,civil rights,
on the air.Her boss,the powerbrokerat
the state’slargestmediacompany,forbade
storiesthat madethe city look bad.Roger’s
medicalcentercolleagueshelpedorganize
pro-integrationeventsfor her to cover.At
one suchpublicforumin 1963,in supportof
schooldesegregation,acontingentof prom-
inentKlansmenshowedup.“There’sBette
Lee,” awomanin attendancesaid to aman
standingnextto Roger.Thoughher blond
beautyand charmoftendisarmedcritics,
the manreplied,“ThatCommiedoesn’t
needamicrophonein her hand,she needsa
bulletin her head.”
Rogerhadgrownaccustomedto death
threats,but whenan anonymousphone
callertold him,“Weknowwhichwayyour
childrenwalkhomefromschool,”hetook
aresearchjob withUSAIDin Indonesiato
get his wife,son and daughterout of town.
Followingthe CIA-backedcoupagainstthe
governmentthere,the familyreturnedto
Birminghamin 1965,and Betteresumedher
challengingcareerin localjournalism,as a
fulltimenewsreporter,publicradio news
directorandproducerof documentaries,
includingone on Birminghamthatwonan
awardat the 1979InternationalFilm &Tele-
visionFestivalin NewYork.
In 1988,weeksafterthe birthof her first
grandchild,Bettelookedbackon her career
in aspeechfor the 25thanniversaryof the
bombingof Birmingham’s16th StreetBap-
tist Church.“If Ihad beenmorecourageous
as areporter,” she wondered,“wouldthose
four younggirls who died in this very sacred
placebe givinggrandchildrento theirpar-
entstoday?”She regrettedthe storiesshe
left untoldbut recalledthe advicealocal
Blacknewspapereditorhad givenher 25
yearsearlier:“Youcan tell it all and choke
off yourvoice,oryou can chipawayand
maybemakeadifference.”
Once,adignitaryBettewas interviewingin
Swedenaskedher whatBirminghamwas
like.After hearingher angerand frustration
spill out, he responded,“My dearyounglady,
Ienvy you,you havelivedhistory.” Indeed,
Betteand RogerHansonlivedthe enviable
life of the fully engaged,in theirwork,their
family,and the Zeitgeisttheyhelpedshape
by chippingawaywithpurpose,verveand a
keensenseof the absurd.
Afterretiring,Bette andRogermovedto
Washingtonto be neartheirchildrenand
families.Rogerdiedin 2002.Betteis sur-
vivedby daughterHeidiand her husband
(MichaelKaiser);son Eric;grandchildrenEr-
ica Hazar(BerkerHazar),NicholasHanson,
JacksonHanson;andgreatgrandchildren
EricMetinHazarandOliverBerkHazar.
Betteis alsosurvivedby belovednieces
MarciaFolven,JaniceJordanand MollyJor-
dan Koch. Bettelovedher familyand her
bestfriends:Florence,Joyce,Lola, Rosalie,
and Gale.Inlieu of flowers,Bette’sfavorite
charitieswereDoctorsWithoutBordersand
ReportersWithoutBorders.Aprivatecele-
brationof Bette’slife is plannedfor the fall.
