securecivilnuclearpowerglobally.
Heissurvivedbyhiswifeof 63 years,Jon-
daRileyMcFarlane,andthefamiliesoftheir
threechildren,Lauren(Steve;Maggie,Tom);
Scott(Malinda;Cara,Pierce,Elliott,Aidan);
andMelissa(John;Tulley,Piper).
Ashisfamily,wewishtoshareourdeep
sadness,andnotehisprofoundimpacton
ourlives.Werememberhiswarmth,his
wisdom,hisdeepbeliefin God,andhis com-
mitmenttoservingothers.Welovedhislong
intricatejokesandenviedhismatchlessski-
ingform.Hehadanuncannywayofmaking
whoeverhewastalkingwithfeellikethe
mostimportantpersonintheroom,andhe
derivedanenormouspleasureinmentoring,
leadingtodeepanduniquefriendshipswith
several generations.
Bud’slifelongdevotiontohiswifeJonda
(‘Jonny’)wasaloveaffairforalltime.Their
marriagereflectedtheirdeepcommitment
toandloveforeachotherandwasanin-
spirationandmodeltomany.Thoughdevas-
tatedbyourloss,wewill alwayscelebrate
thebigandwonderfullifehehadandare
gratefulthathecreatedit sofullywithus.

Dennis(affectionatelyknownasDenny)was
bornin Dayton,Ohio,October20,1935.His
parentsandhisbrothers,JackandBob,pre-
deceasedhim.Denny’stirelessworkethic
beganwhenhewasayoungboy.Atavery
earlyage,hehadanewspaperroute,helped
outinhisfamily’smeatmarket,andduring
theschoolholidaystookshiftsathislocal
postoffice.
HeattendedtheUniversityofDayton,and
remainedloyaltohisalmamater,wherehe
servedontheBoardofTrusteesfrom 1986
until1995.Afterhisundergraduateyears,
hemovedtoWashington,DC,toattend
GeorgetownUniversitySchoolofLaw,from
whichhereceivedbothhisJDandhisLLMin
tax. Dennisalwaysmaintainedaclosere-
lationshiptotheLawSchool(atonetimehe
wasChairmanoftheBoard)andalsotothe
College,asdemonstratedbyhisdevotion
totheGeorgetownHoyasbasketballteam.
Henevermissedagamewhentheywere
playingintown.In2010,hereceivedthe
prestigiousJohnCarrollAwardfromGeorge-
townUniversityforhiscontributionstothe
LawSchool.
Aftergraduatingfromlawschool,Den-
nyjoinedthefirmofBaker&McKenziein
1960,whereatage39hebecameExecu-
tiveCommitteeChair.Hewascommitted
tothedemocraticprocessandmakingsure
thateveryone’svoicewasbeingheard,a
leadershipstylethatisnowahallmarkof
thefirm.Heis widelyconsideredoneofthe
foundingfathersoftheBaker&McKenzie
taxpractice,whichhasbecomethepremier
taxpracticeintheworld.Denny’smarkat
Baker&McKenziewilllastforever.

Dennyco-founded Potomac Investment
Associates,aleadingrealestatecompany
intheDCarea,whosenotableprojectwas
thedevelopmentoftheAvenelgolfcommu-
nity.Inthe1970sDenny’sentrepreneurial
spiritledhimtopurchasetheDailyExpress
truckingcompanyinCarlisle,PA,whichis
nowoneofthelargestspecializedtrucking
companiesinthenation.Dennywasalsoa
chairmanoftheBusinessBank,alocallend-
ingbankintheWashingtonarea.It grewto
multiplebranchesandwasrecentlysoldto
UnitedBank.
TosaythatDennylivedafullandhappy
lifewouldbeanunderstatement.Hewas
anavidgolfer,tennisplayer,andtraveler,
wholovedgoingouttovariousrestaurants.
WhenDennywasn’tin theoffice,heenjoyed
workinginhisgarden,tendingtohisbox-
woodsandazaleas.Hewashappiestwhen
hewassurroundedbyhislarge,extended
familyandnumerousfriends.
AlifelongdevoutCatholic,Denniswasa
KnightofMaltawhobelievedin givingback
toothersandwasabenefactorofnumer-
ous,variedphilanthropies.His strongethi-
calcompassmadehimanidealmemberof
theBoardofTrusteesatTrinityWashington
UniversityandattheKeenanInstituteat
DukeUniversity.AtSt. Stephen’sandSt.Ag-
nesSchool,inAlexandria,(whichallofhis
childrenattended),DennywastheChairof
theFoundationBoardfrom 1994 to 2004
andontheBoardofGovernorsfrom 2006
until2012. Dennisbelievedintheimpor-
tanceofeducationandinsupportingfinan-
cialaidinitiativesatalloftheschoolswhere
heandhischildrenwereeducated.Hehad
aspecialaffinityforthestudentsatthe
WashingtonJesuitAcademy.
Dennisissurvivedbyhislovingwifeof 60
years,RitaMeyer,andsixdevotedchildren
andtheirspouses: MatthewMeyer(Jen-
nifer),MichaelMeyer,CatieMeyer,Peter
Meyer(Kit),DenisePrince(Stuart),andAb-
igailMeyer(MaxQuinzani),alongwith 16
grandchildrenwhomhelovedbeyondmea-

andCentralAmerica,visiting 13 countries

in 1998.

years,heservedasaParkRanger,Environ-

andmostrecently,SupervisoryRanger.He

Park,andothers.Brent’sheartwasforever

andfinallyWashington,DC,wherethey
joinedtheKnollwoodMilitaryRetirement
Communityin 2008.
Mickeyhadseeminglyboundlessenergy,
aninfectiouslaugh,andgreatcuriosity.She
lovedplayingtennis,hiking,andtraveling,all
ofwhichshepassedonasamotheranda
GirlScouttroopleader.Shesharedheren-
thusiasmfortheater,music,museums,and
historicalsiteswitheveryonesheencoun-
tered.SheadoredtheNewYorkYankees
andhadaprizedgameballtoproveit.In
Washington,DCMickeypitchedforaCon-
gressionalsoftballteamandenjoyedthe
WashingtonNationals.

Molly,Abigail,andLisa;sevengrandchildren:

asticbeachgoer.Shealsoenjoyedreading,
stitching,andwatchingSundayfootballwith
family.

homesinAlexandria,VirginiaandMarcoIs-
land,Florida,Kayenjoyedcelebratingfam-
ilymilestonesatAshfordCastleinCounty
Mayo,Ireland.
