Boat International - May 2018

I didn’t buy my first boat until I was
in my early 30s. It was a 10m Cougar
with fuel-injected 850hp engines.
Then I went to a 13m Outerlimits
with twin 1,200hp motors.
After freaking myself out
enough doing 130mph, the
boat burned down to the
waterline. A friend saw
flames shooting out of the
engines and we jumped overboard.
After that I was done with go-fast
boats. My first cruiser was a 24m
Azimut but after three years I decided
I wanted something bigger. I stayed
in the family and bought my Benetti.
I was very hands-on, starting with
the colour. I am passionate about cars.
I own several Ferraris and I wanted
that Ferrari red; they thought I was
crazy. When we picked up the boat in
Viareggio, my girlfriend Missy and
I spent 73 days cruising the Med.
But I prefer to get of the beaten track
and I love the Bahamas. The Exumas
are my favourite place; the water is
so crystal clear and still relatively
unspoilt. I am in discussion with
Benetti for a 52m steel yacht but that
will be it, no bigger. All my boats have
been named Constance Joy after my
mother; her father gave her
the name because
he said
she would
always be a
constant joy.

My life in boats

Interview – Grace Trofa

Sharon Lessard
Yacht: Lady S
Length: 46.1m
Year: 1989
Location: Fort Lauderdale

How’s Lady S running?
She’s still in the boatyard. We’re making several
upgrades to her – sound system, washer/dryer,
refreshed captain’s cabin. We’re also installing an
entirely new dining area with all new flatware and
china. We’re also adding new toys – kayaks, jet
skis, paddleboards and a dinghy. And almost all
the furniture on the yacht is being replaced. It’s
really exciting
What does 2018 hold in store?
We haven’t confirmed our 2018 cruising plan yet,
but when she is ready to go we will be making her
available for charter. We will use her for roughly
four weeks with the family. Our best trip on her to
date has been to Cuba. We spent two weeks there
last July. It was like stepping back into the 1950s
but the people were so lovely but so much
is lacking. We handed out things from the boat
like toiletries and even these small gestures
made people so happy
