What is so special about Portofino?

The port reminds me of Venice, with all

thebeautifulcoloursofthebuildings

andthepaintedmotifsonthefaçades.

It’saplacewhereyoucanlistentothe

church bells and watch the world go

by on the Piazzetta di Portofino. Time

stops and it is a place of pure magic.

There are no cars or aggressive noises

• they are replaced by the sounds of
  themarket,dogs,childrenrunningand
  old boats entering the harbour

Some years ago, a few of

us chipped in to create

a bespoke LINLEY box for

a friend we were staying

with. It had a silhouette

of our friend’s boat crafted

in marquetry on the lid

and within it we put some

binoculars. A backgammon

hi-tech wireless device will store the complete

works of Pavarotti for the first time, and it has

been housed in a limited-edition LINLEY box
