A must-see for boat enthusiasts, this facility is located in the

Hasköy district along the banks of the Golden Horn, the ancient

natural harbour of Byzantium, Constantinople and Istanbul.

Founded in 1994 by an automotive sector tycoon and named

after him, this impressive collection of more than 13,500

objects relects the gentleman’s passion for the sea. Rahmi

M. Koç likes to be personally involved in the acquisition and

restoration of new pieces.

he collection, devoted to both water and land transport,

is located partly in an old foundry for anchors, and partly in a

19 th century dockyard. Both complexes have been impeccably

restored. Boating New Zealand’s December 2017 issue ran a

feature of one of its exhibits, the exquisitely restored 1927-built

Royal Navy picket boat Maid of Honour.

Exhibits range from a tiny, late 19th century rowing boat for

children, about a metre long, to a 94m 1944 US-built Tench-

Class submarine, the TC Uluçalireis. She is named after a 16th

century Ottoman admiral of Italian descent.

In between are numerous working and pleasure craft, both

sailing and motorised. hey include the Dutch steam tugs Liman

2 (1936) and Rosalie (1873), the steamers Gonca, Esra and Ysolt,

the cargo vessel Tekel 15, the passenger ferry Fenerbahçe, the

commuter Hiawatha, three Rivas and other runabouts.

Also displayed are the yachts used by the irst two Turkish sailors

to circumnavigate the globe: Sadun Boro’s Kismet and the sloop

Uzaklar, built to an Alan Buchanan design. On weekends the museum

organises short cruises on the Golden Horn on board the steam tugs.

On weekdays the same tours are carried out by the Kont Ostrorog, a

converted diesel working boat.
