The Outboard Boating Club’s annual Vetus Maxwell Nauti Girls fishing tournament
took place on Saturday 4 November 2017.
The day started cloudy with light winds, but heavy rain set in and the winds
increased to 20 knots after lunch. Many came back drenched, drained and some
minus breakfast, but it didn’t deter teams from getting dressed up and ready for a
night of food, drinks and dancing.
At prizegiving Merinika Ryder from Make-A-Wish spoke about wish child, Brendan,
for whom the Nauti Girls competition fundraised.  Brendan is 18 years old and has
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His wish is to go spear-fishing at the Three Kings Islands.
Merinika also shared a few other children’s simple wishes, such as one boy who
lived in hospital for a lengthy period who wished for his own bed from home. There
was barely a dry eye in the room listening to some of these stories.
A total of $4,100 was raised for Make-A-Wish from the fishing event.
Make-A-Wish creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses to
enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
