Fresh thinking

W

elcome to our special ‘go
faster’ issue, in which we’ve
packed in more tips and
advice than ever before! A
whole host of top sailors –
the likes of Paralympic gold medallist, Helena
Lucas and Land Rover BAR’s sailing manager,
Jono Macbeth – explain how best to improve your
sailing skills, whether you are looking to build your
confi dence on the start line, improve your tactical
decision making, or optimise your boat for IRC.
Another great place to pick up ideas for
improving your sailing is, of course, the 2018 RYA
Dinghy Show. Yachts & Yachting is delighted to
be the offi cial media partner to the event once
again, which takes place on 3-4 March. As ever, we
can’t wait to see what’s new in the dinghy world
and meet up with friends, readers and industry
experts. Do drop by at the stand (C64) to say hello
and look out for the Y&Y team around the show.
Find out more about what’s happening at the
show with your offi cial guide, free with this issue.
We’re also excited to be announcing the overall
winner of the RYA and Y&Y Club of the Year
Award live on the Suzuki main stage at 4pm on
Saturday. Vote online before 20 February.
Congratulations this month go to the British

Sailing team with its impressive haul of four golds
in Miami. Among them was 470 silver medallist
Luke Patience, who has found new impetus for
his campaign from his recent foray into big boat
sailing. His interview on page 24 is a good reminder
of the breadth of what our sport has to off er.
Meanwhile, the topic of gender equality has been
pushed to the fore in the sailing world, thanks to
the ongoing Volvo Ocean Race. Th is month, we
have given top female sailors the chance to share
their opinion on how this latest move is shaping our
sport. We’re entering an era where women sailors
are hailed as heroes not just for being female but
for being good sailors, judged on an equal footing.
Th e VOR is showing us the way, and providing
both inspiration and
learning points for female
and male sailors alike;
