GREAT READING

This month our sister
magazine, Sailing Today,
tests the radical design of
the Beneteau 51.1 – and in a
Mediterranean special, Rod
Heikell demystifies the
Mistral, and other Med
winds. Meanwhile, Classic
Boat’s Nigel Sharp reports
on the Admiral’s Cup
Regatta in Sydney, while
Rob Peake writes about
the Tore Holm Bermudan
cutter, Havsörnen. Finally
the Blackwater Sloop is
CB’s ‘affordable classic’.

Paralympic return?
The International
Paralympic Committee
(IPC) has announced
that Sailing, along with
Cerebral Palsy Football,
Golf, and Powerchair
Football, have all
progressed to the next
stage of the application
process for Paris 2024.
This means the four
sports will be up for
inclusion on the Paris
2024 Paralympic
programme. But the

decision from the IPC
does not mean the four
sports are guaranteed
to feature in the French
capital in six years’ time.
This is far from the
fi nal hurdle, but getting
over this fi rst hurdle to
be included in the
sports potentially
making it to Paris is a
positive sign that
changes in Paralympic
sailing are having the
desired effect.

Boat Show boosted
The newly changed London Boat Show, which this
year took place over five days for the first time, has
been hailed a success by industry members and
featured a star-studded evening for the Y&Y Awards
presentation 2018.
The 14 winners of Y&Y Awards were presented
with their trophies on the evening of Thursday 11
January in front of the packed crowd at the show’s
Legends’ Theatre. “It’s an honour to even be
nominated among these huge names in sailing, let
alone win,” commented Alex Thomson on receiving
his award for Pro Sailor of the Year. RICHARD LANGDON; C/O LENDY COWES WEEK; BENEDETTA PIT SCHEIDER; ALEX IRWIN

Laurence Mead has been announced as the new
regatta director for Lendy Cowes Week.
The director’s responsibilities are to lead all
on-the-water aspects of the regatta and Mead
will join existing management team members
Kate Johnson and Andrew Rayner.
Laurence is no stranger to Cowes Week
having raced at the world-famous regatta for
the fi rst time in 1982. He has competed in
everything from Flying Fifteens to IRC Class 1
and was also class president of the Etchells.
He brings a range of business expertise,
having headed up a number of companies as
CEO. Laurence says his principal aim is to work
hard at modernising the regatta – while also
being mindful of the event’s heritage.
