505 Ovington Inlands
Chris Turner stepped in with crew
Sam Pascoe at Grafham Water to win
the 505 title at the Ovington Inlands.
After taking four bullets straight off

  • leaving world champions and the
    rest scrabbling for minor podium
spots – they then put the overall
result beyond doubt with another win
in the opening race on day two, while
light wind 505 specialists Ian Pinnell
    and Tim Needham scored a
consistent 2,1,2,1 for a close second.

Int Canoe claims Paignton

Christmas Cracker win
The fourth round of the
Sailing Southwest Winter
Series took place at
Paignton in a chilly Force
2-3 northeasterly, which
did nothing to dampen the
festive spirit of the
Christmas Cracker.
Nearly 20 visitors turned
out for the two-hour
pursuit race, supported by
live GPS boat tracking from
Sailing Southwest. The
finish saw the International

Canoe of Chris Hampe well
ahead but there was a battle
between the Merlins of Sam
and Lianne Thompson and
John Turner-Katie Frost,
the former eventually
taking second. Paul and
Miles Proctor, in their
2000, eventually
succumbed to fourth with
Tim and Sarah Parsons’
Scorpion in fifth, just ahead
of the RS400 of Iain and
Charlotte Horlock.

GP14 nails Notts County

First of the Year Race
Notts County SC’s traditional First of the Year Race saw two
races in a light breeze for the 44-strong fleet of entries from
across the east Midlands.
The Geoff Parker Memorial trophy and Phil Davies Cup
are awarded at the event and this year went to Peter Gray
and Rich Pepperdine from Staunton Harold and John Parr
and Kim Parnham from the home club. Gray/Pepperdine
won overall, claiming both slow fleet races in their GP14 by
a good margin. Solo sailor Steve Bishop from Girton was
second in the slow fleet and second overall while the fast
handicap fleet was won by the RS400 of Parr and Parnham,
in third overall. The windsurf winner was Guy Sprekley.
More than £350 was raised for charity, Maggie’s Centres.

Alternative penalty
at North Wales
Christmas Regatta
When Ffion Bailey infringed brother Jac’s
Tera at Port Dinorwic SC, he offered an
alternative penalty: rescue RS300 sailor
Mark Taylor’s snowman – seen floating
around the wing mark...
Ffion obliged but perhaps Taylor
should have had a reindeer crewing like
his Prestwick SC clubmate Alistair
(Storky) Mclaughlin – who won the
adult handicap class. Jac beat sister Ffion
to Tera victory; the youth handicap fleet
was won by Molly Wright (Laser4.7); the
Toppers by Annabelle Pierce-Jones;
Regatta by Morgan Rogers; and the
windsurfers by Catrin Williams.

LIZ NOBLET

Leigh on Sea
Brass Monkey
The Leigh on Sea SC Brass Monkey
Trophy race concluded the club’s
nine-race Winter Series, which saw 36
boats competing; Lloyd Walker
(Enterprise) topped the main
handicap fleet and Jonnie Wells was
thebestoftheveteranSolofleet.
In the Brass Monkey, the winners
were 29er sailors Will Taylor/Luke
Beuvink (Essex YC) with Mike Iszatt’s
RS600 (King George) second and Solo
sailor John Charles, third.

Youth sailors dominate
Draycote Water SC
festive pursuit series
Draycote Water SC’s open bank
holiday pursuit race series concluded
on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Breezier conditions over the festive
period saw Optimist sailor Millie
Irish finish third overall. The Boxing
Day pursuit was won by Fireballers
Mike Deane and Paul Disney, while
brothers Harrison and Fergus Pye in
their RS Feva rose to second overall
in the series. The final race was won
by Jeremy Davy and Martin Huett in
a Flying Fifteen while a third for the
Pyes saw them claim the series
overall, ahead of Bolland in second.
