Classic Boat — March 2018

(Darren Dugan) #1

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Here is the latest new, half-decked, inboard diesel-powered fi shing boat built
by Alasdair Grant on the Isle of Ewe (population seven). She’s 18ft long and
built for a customer who lives in Tiree who plans to take her rod-fi shing. The
boat was built with two heavy bilge keels and stainless steel strapping, with a
towing point on the forefoot for hauling the boat out of the water when the
weather is poor, as Tiree is a fairly exposed island. The backbone is mainly of
opepe, with a curved oak transom. Planking is in larch, copper fastened to the
oak framing. “One plus of launching in January is that you get to do sea trials in
decent weather,” said Alasdair, “a proper test.”

beam strengthening, and the removal of some now extraneous gear
like the self-steering mechanism.
Meanwhile site colleague Tom Evans has been working on the 1957,
35ft (10.7m) sloop Sara Moraea, designed by the little-known (in
Britain at least) but prolifi c Swedish Olle Enderlein. Tom has been
working on her over the winter, with the keel off , refastening frames
and deadwoods. Cosmetic work will follow.
