 I

t’s been 16 yearssince I ran Hull No. 1 of Tiara Yachts’ 4200 Open.
Back then I noted that her optional 700 hp Caterpillar C12 diesels provided
a 34.6-knot top hop and a 29.5-knot cruise speed. Notable features: She
had a solid fi berglass hull and balsa-cored sides. Twin 535 hp Cummins
QSM11s were standard. Electronic controls were optional. Her range was 288
nautical miles at cruise speed. Belowdecks: The Plan A layout had a forepeak
stateroom, and the Plan C layout had a second twin-bunk stateroom abaft and
to starboard of the forepeak. All layouts had one head. Availability: At press
time, 14 of the Tiara 4200 Open were on the market, ranging from $299,995
for a 2003 cruising model to $429,000 for a 2007 boat tricked out to fi sh.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

“The 4200’s hull form has fi ne
convex sections forward
that moderate to 17.5 degrees of
deadrise at the transom. She
has a shallow keel to enhance
directional stability. Her ride
at cruising speed was dry and com-
fortable in the 2- to 4-foot seas.”
