Boat International US Edition — February 2018

At first glance, the SX88 is unlike any Sanlorenzo that has preceded it.
The superstructure is original and muscular, with a reverse windshield
and lines that swoop back to a long, low, teak-clad stern.
For hull No 1, Sanlorenzo called in Italian architect and designer
Piero Lissoni who turned the main deck into one big open space,
bordered by near floor-to-ceiling windows. “I wanted the interior like
a loft. In architectural terms, a loft is a beautiful space, without frames
and corridors.” As for the master cabin, that’s down below. Nav station?
Upstairs. Galley? A floating unit at the side of salon, which can be
extended or moved. Sofas, tables and other furniture can be rearranged
at will. All that’s left to encroach on this open space is a staircase, which
almost appears to float.
Much of the SX88, with styling by Officina Italiana Design, owes its
genesis to former Olympic sailor turned boat builder Luca Santella, who
used to own the Bluegame yard. When he presented his concept to
Massimo Perotti, the owner of Sanlorenzo, he was met with a positive
response. “The market went through a radical change [after the
recession] and only experienced, passionate and true sea lovers
remained as players,” Perotti says. “I truly believed that this new concept
of boating could match very well the new market trend expectations.”
As the yard made contact with potential buyers of the new boat,
dubbed “X” for crossover, it became clear that there was significant
interest. Before the first boat was complete, 11 units had been sold – not
bad for an unproven design with a price tag of more than €5 million.
