Hull 1015, the largest sportfisher built entirely in carbon, has been launched at Yachting
Developments in New Zealand, a lightfoot battlewagon for serious fishing. Michael
Peters Yacht Design (MPYD) of Sarasota, Florida, worked on the naval architecture,
conceptual styling and space planning of the 129ft 6in sportfisher for an owner it knew
from a previous project at McMullen & Wing.
“High speed was not a real important goal of the client – 20 knots cruising and a
top speed of 25 knots,” says Chris Critchett of MPYD. “[However] he opted for the
larger commercial MTU engines [with 6,200 combined horsepower], which gave us
plenty of range, and she did over 28 knots on sea trial. For a 39.5 meter sportfishing
boat, that’s pretty fast.”
The yard handled the interior work and structural engineering and launched the boat
under weight. “The New Zealand yards are the only ones I know to consistently build
lighter than anticipated,” Critchett says. mpyd.net; yachtingdevelopments.co.nz
