FEBRUARY 2018

The day is April 15, 1956.
Grace Kelly, wearing
American fashion by
Ben Zuckerman and a big white
hat concealing her face – a faux
pas that hurt the Monegasques’
feelings, according to The
Te l e g r a p h (although they don’t
seem to have held it against
her) – steps off the royal yacht
Deo Juvante II into a brand new
life. That evening 1947 vintage
Dom Pérignon flows at a gala
dinner held in honor of Grace’s
and Prince Rainier’s upcoming
nuptials at the Racing Club.
The yacht that delivers the
princess-to-be to Monaco is
docked in Port Hercules in
front of the yacht club. A 1928
Camper & Nicholsons built for
an Argentine, the yacht was
a gift to the principality from
Aristotle Onassis, and the couple
used it on their honeymoon. The
principality sold the 128ft vessel
in 1958 and it went on to have
many lives. It now is a charter
yacht owned and operated by
Quasar Expeditions in the
Galápagos and named Grace
in memory of its two year
service to the gracious half of
one of the world ’s most famous
royal couples.
