SALT IN HIS VEINS
“Looking back from the perspective
of a life afloat, I still have no firm idea
why I took to the sea. I just fell in love
with it, with its promise of adventure,
and I was fascinated with sailing
ships,” writes yacht designer Ron
Holland in chapter one of his memoir All The Oceans: Designing by the
seat of my pants.
Born in New Zealand to “landlubbers,” Holland attracted the
attention of the national newspaper at 13 for hopping onto an 18ft boat
and sailing to Waiheke Island off Auckland.
He loathed school until a clever teacher put a naval textbook in
his hands. He was just 19 when he designed his first yacht.
Holland, who has shaped the sailing and yachting world for decades

  • from the Eygthene 24 to M5, as he puts it – offers an insight into his
life and fascinating friends. Rupert Murdoch wrote the foreword of the
384 page self-published book, available from April 2018.

NO TIME WASTERS

Nuvolari Lenard embarks on the next
quarter century of its history with
a portfolio full of new designs and
a résumé full of remarkable boats,
including trendsetting Oceanco
Alfa Nero (its aft deck pool and black
masts have been emulated many
times), the record-breaking sailing
yacht Black Pearl, launched last year
also at Oceanco, and multiple
production boats, including a new Adler
(see page 32). The pair created the new
Palmer Johnson style before the
company left the US, helped relaunch
the Marquis brand and is now entwined
with Monte Carlo Yachts, much
closer to their Venetian home.
Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard, both
avid boaters, met at a boat show more
than 25 years ago and hit it off. “We
are very different, I am much more
technical so we overlap in the right
way, we don’t conflict. I hope we will be
friends for a long time,” Nuvolari says.
2018 will see the launch of
Oceanco’s project 718, a 357ft yacht.
The firm is also working with Lürssen,
CRN and Turquoise and employs 15
people. “We are designers. We have
to produce ideas and we have a lot of
good ideas. They will be seen in three
to four years,” Nuvolari says.
