OWNERS’ CLUB

Former owner
of Salperton
Length: 147ft
Year: 2009

You’ve waved goodbye to Salperton. Why did you part
ways? We had done 170,000 sea miles in that yacht, and
owned her for eight and a half years, which is a hell of a lot.
We did the Pacific, South America, Cape Horn – twice! I’ve
reached a point where I don’t mind traveling long distances
but I don’t want 11 time zone changes
So what’s next? I’m buying hull four of the Sanlorenzo
460EXP series. It’s in build now and due for delivery in
June, which suits me just fine – it’s the first time in a while
I won’t be paying for expensive winter maintenance! We’ll
carry a 30ft sailing boat on the back and a new tender. It’s
141ft LOA but has mega volume. It’s even got a laundry and
fridge/freezer room down below. Amazing
Where will you cruise the new boat? We’re looking at
Brittany, Ireland, Scotland and all the way up to Norway and
Svalbard. I want to see the ice cap
How did you come across the boat? I saw Moka, hull No 1
of the 460EXP, at the Monaco Yacht Show. I was ready to
move into a motor yacht and I liked the idea of the explorer
type boat. I also looked at the 140ft Feadship Andiamo.
I was happy to go into a refit but then the opportunity came
along to buy the Sanlorenzo. And we were in time to change
the interior to our tastes
Will you miss sailing? The fact is that owning a big sailing
boat is just as expensive, if not more, than owning a motor
yacht – the cost of the sails, sheets, halyards, winches,
hydraulic packages, etc. I will miss certain things, like
sailing through Saint-Tropez bay on a short tack, which
always got a clap. But we’ll carry a small sailing boat and
may charter occasionally, so I’ll still get my fix
Will you keep the famous Salperton name? Yes, but I
don’t think I’ll name the new motor yacht Salperton. It’s got
a long association with sailing boats, and I might go back
to sailing one day, so I’ll have it in my back pocket

Every month, you tell us where
you are on the seven seas,
what you can see from your
deck and your top trip tips
