With the support of the Ferrymead Mitre 10, the Canterbury
Classic Boat group was able to build a boat in a day. The boat
was an American flat-bottomed rowing skiff and was raffled off
at the event prize-giving.
With the help of pre-made frames, pre-cut ply panels and
much unsolicited advice, the skiff was slapped together with
screws, glue and plenty of humour before being launched for a
lap rowing around a low-tide sand bank.
Conditions for the afternoon sail-past/race were perfect with
a moderate southwesterly harbour draft. The lead was swapped
between several Joel White shellback dinghies, a Welsford
Navigator and former Olympian Brett De Their in his elegant
gaff-rigged dory. BNZ
